New Carpet Smell: How Long It Lasts and How to Get Rid of It Faster

That “new carpet smell” is one of the most common questions after an install. The good news: for most homes it fades noticeably within the first few days and keeps fading over the next couple of weeks. Here’s where it comes from, how to speed things up, and how to tell when the smell isn’t really “new carpet” at all.

Where the Smell Comes From

The smell comes mostly from the carpet’s backing, the pad underneath and any adhesive used during installation. A carpet that was rolled up tightly in a warehouse or truck tends to release more of it in the first days after it’s unrolled in your home.

Before the Install

  • Ask about low-odor options. Look for carpet, pad and adhesive certified under the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label Plus (carpet) or Green Label (pad) programs, which test for lower emissions.
  • Ask if the installer can unroll it first in their warehouse for a day or so before bringing it in.
  • Ask whether adhesive is needed at all. Most stretched-in carpet doesn’t need glue.

After the Install: How to Get Rid of It Faster

  1. Keep the air moving. Run ceiling fans and box fans in the room, and run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans to pull air out of the house.
  2. Keep the AC running. In Florida, humid air makes smells hang on longer. Keeping the house cool and dry helps.
  3. Change the AC filter a day or two after the install. It catches carpet fibers and dust and can hold the smell.
  4. Vacuum a few times in the first week, ideally with a HEPA vacuum, to pick up loose fibers.
  5. Try baking soda. Sprinkle it lightly, leave it overnight, then vacuum it up.
  6. Use an air purifier with an activated carbon filter in the room, since carbon is what captures odors.
  7. Skip heavy air fresheners and candles. They add another smell on top instead of removing the first one.

If the smell is still strong after a few weeks, contact the installer or manufacturer. They may have specific guidance, and it’s worth asking what your warranty covers.

When It’s Not “New Carpet Smell”

New carpet smells chemical or rubbery. If your new carpet smells musty, damp or like mildew, that’s a different problem. The carpet or pad may have gotten wet in storage or during delivery, or there may be moisture coming up from the slab underneath, from a past leak or even a slab leak. New carpet won’t fix a moisture problem underneath, and it can trap it. See how to get a smell out of carpet and what a musty smell means. We offer a free visual inspection with moisture readings and an infrared (thermal) camera to check for hidden moisture under floors and behind walls. Lab testing is separate if it’s needed.
