Burnt Smell in the House After a Kitchen Fire? How to Get Rid of It

A grease flare-up, a forgotten pot, burnt popcorn in the microwave: it only takes a few minutes for the whole house to smell like smoke. And with the AC running, that smell gets pulled into every room and into the system itself.

First, safety: if there was real fire damage, like scorched cabinets, a damaged ceiling, or smoke staining across rooms, have the area checked before cleaning. Our fire damage restoration team can help. This guide is for smaller incidents where the main problem is the smell.

Why the Smell Hangs Around

Smoke from burnt food carries tiny greasy particles. They settle on cabinets, walls, ceilings, curtains, couches and inside the AC. That film keeps releasing the smell, which is why it seems to come back every time the house warms up or the AC kicks on.

What to Do Right Away

  1. Get the source out. Take burnt pots, pans and food outside.
  2. Run the range hood and bathroom exhaust fans to pull smoky air out.
  3. Change the AC filter. It caught a lot of that smoke.
  4. Wipe down hard surfaces in the kitchen: cabinets inside and out, the backsplash, the range hood and filters, and the ceiling above the stove.
  5. Wash fabrics: curtains, dish towels, couch covers and throw pillows.

What Doesn’t Work

Candles, plug-ins and odor sprays only mask the smell for a few hours. Painting right over smoke film can trap the smell, which comes back through later. Clean first, then use an odor-blocking primer if you repaint.

When the Smell Won’t Leave

If you’ve cleaned and the house still smells like smoke days later, the odor has gotten into places you can’t reach: inside cabinets and walls, upholstery, and the AC system. Our whole-home odor removal treatment treats the air throughout the entire home, including one AC system, to remove that lingering smell. You’ll be out of the home for about 8 hours.
