Burning Smell in the House but Nothing’s on Fire? Common Causes and What to Do

A burning smell with no fire in sight is one of the most unsettling things to notice at home. Sometimes it’s harmless, like dust burning off a heater the first time it runs. Sometimes it’s an outlet, a wire or an AC motor overheating. This guide walks through the common causes in Florida homes, but the first rule comes before all of them.

Safety First

If you see smoke or flames, hear crackling or buzzing in a wall, or the smell keeps getting stronger, get everyone out and call 911. Don’t stay inside searching for the source. If you smell gas (a rotten-egg smell), leave and call 911 or your gas company from outside. If it’s safe and you know which circuit is involved, you can shut it off at the breaker. Electrical and AC problems should be checked by a licensed electrician or HVAC technician.

Electrical Burning Smell (Often Like Burning Plastic)

Overheating wiring, outlets and switches often smell like burning plastic, and sometimes like fish (see why does my house smell like fish?). Warning signs:

  • An outlet or switch cover that’s warm, discolored or melted
  • Flickering lights or a breaker that keeps tripping
  • Overloaded power strips or extension cords, or a light fixture with a bulb that’s too strong for it

Unplug what you can, stop using that outlet or circuit, and call a licensed electrician.

Burning Smell From the AC Vents

  • First time using the heat: on those few cold Florida mornings, dust on the heat strips burns off and can smell burnt. If it fades within a short time, that’s usually normal.
  • A smell that stays, or smells electrical: a blower motor, capacitor or wiring may be overheating. Turn the system off at the thermostat and call an HVAC technician.
  • A very dirty filter makes the system work harder. Check and change it.

For other smells that show up when the AC runs, see why your house smells when the AC turns on.

Other Common Causes

  • The dryer: lint buildup in the trap or vent. Clean the lint trap every load and have the vent cleaned regularly.
  • The oven or stove: old spills burning off, or something that fell under a burner.
  • Appliance motors: a vacuum belt, fridge or dishwasher motor running hot.
  • Space heaters and hair tools too close to fabric or plastic.
  • Smoke from outside: brush fires, a neighbor’s fire pit or grill can drift in through the AC and gaps around doors.
  • Only you smell it? If no one else in the house notices it, mention it to your doctor.

After the Cause Is Fixed, the Smell Can Hang On

Once an electrician or HVAC tech fixes the problem, the burnt or burnt-plastic smell can stay in the air, the AC system and fabrics for days or longer. Wash curtains and bedding, change the AC filter, and wipe down hard surfaces near where it happened. If something actually burned:

When the cause is fixed and the smell is still through the whole home, our whole-home odor removal treatment treats the air throughout the entire home, including one AC system and an attached garage. You’ll be out for about 8 hours. It’s an odor treatment only and doesn’t fix wiring or equipment, so the electrician or HVAC repair always comes first. Smell something different?
