Most hurricane damage we see isn’t from wind tearing roofs off. It’s water: rain driven through windows and doors, small roof leaks, flooding, and power outages that shut the AC off for days. Here’s a practical checklist for before, during, and after a storm.
Before the Storm
- Check roof shingles or tiles, flashing, and gutters. Clear debris.
- Check window and sliding door seals and weatherstripping.
- Clean the AC condensate drain line so it doesn’t back up.
- Know where your main water shutoff is.
- Move valuables and documents off the floor in flood-prone areas.
- Take date-stamped photos and video of your home’s condition for insurance.
- Review your policy, including your hurricane deductible and whether you have flood insurance.
During the Storm
- Keep towels handy for windows and doors that weep water.
- Watch ceilings for stains or drips, and put a bucket under active leaks.
- Stay safe. Don’t go into flooded areas with electricity on.
After the Storm
- Document all damage before cleanup.
- Report claims promptly.
- Start drying fast. Mold can start within 24 to 48 hours, and after a storm restoration companies get busy, so call early.
- Tarp roof damage to prevent more water getting in.
- If the power was out and the AC was off for days, check closets, bathrooms, and AC areas for musty smells or spots.
- Watch out for storm-chasing contractors. Use licensed, local companies and get written estimates.
