Why Does My House Smell Sour or Like Vinegar? Causes and Fixes

A sour or vinegar-like smell in the house is easy to notice and hard to place. It isn’t as sharp as ammonia or as heavy as sewage. It’s more like old dishrags, sour milk, or damp gym clothes. In Florida homes, it usually traces back to moisture, the AC system, or something in the kitchen or laundry room.

Common Causes of a Sour Smell

  • The AC system. A “dirty socks” or sour smell when the AC runs often points to buildup on the coil, a clogged drain pan or line, or a dirty filter. See why your house smells when the AC turns on.
  • Kitchen drains and the garbage disposal. Food and grease buildup turns sour fast in the heat.
  • The dishwasher. Food trapped in the filter and around the door seal.
  • The washing machine. Front-loaders trap water and soap in the door gasket and drum, and clothes left wet in the machine sour quickly.
  • Sponges, dishrags and mops that stay damp.
  • Spoiled food or a fridge drip pan. Check the back of the fridge, the drip pan underneath, and the pantry.
  • Hidden moisture. A slow leak under a sink or behind an appliance can start sour and turn musty.
  • Vinegar itself. If you’ve been cleaning with vinegar, the smell can hang around for a day or so. That one goes away on its own.

How to Get Rid of It

  1. Change the AC filter and have the drain line, pan and coil cleaned by an AC company if the smell comes with the AC.
  2. Clean the kitchen drains and disposal and run hot water through them.
  3. Clean the dishwasher filter and door seal.
  4. Clean the washer gasket and drum, run a cleaning cycle, and leave the door open between loads.
  5. Toss old sponges and rags, and let mops dry fully.
  6. Check under sinks and behind appliances for leaks or damp spots.

When Sour Turns Musty

If the smell is getting stronger, smells damp or earthy, or you find soft spots or stains near a sink, appliance or the AC closet, there may be water you can’t see. We offer a free visual inspection with moisture readings and an infrared (thermal) camera to find hidden moisture. Lab testing is separate if it’s needed. When the Smell Has Spread Through the Home

Once the source is cleaned or fixed, a sour smell that got pulled through the AC can linger in fabrics and the air. Our whole-home odor removal treatment treats the air throughout the entire home, including one AC system and an attached garage. You’ll be out for about 8 hours. It’s an odor treatment only, so AC buildup, leaks and drains have to be handled first.
