Why Smoke Smell Is So Hard to Get Rid Of

Cigarette, cigar, and fire smoke don’t just hang in the air. Smoke particles settle into drywall, paint, carpet, curtains, furniture, and the inside of your AC ducts. In South Florida, where the AC runs most of the year, that odor gets pulled through the system and blown back into every room. That’s why air fresheners, candles, and even a fresh coat of paint often don’t fix it. The smell comes back as soon as the house warms up or the AC kicks on.

How to Get Rid of Smoke Smell in Your House: What You Can Try First

  • Remove the source: Stop smoking indoors and remove ashtrays, smoke-soaked cushions, and old curtains.
  • Wash what you can: Wash bedding, curtains, and washable fabrics. Wipe hard surfaces and walls with a degreasing cleaner to remove the yellow film.
  • Replace your AC filter: A smoke-filled filter keeps sending odor through the house.
  • Clean carpets and upholstery: Professional carpet cleaning helps with surface odor.
  • Keep the AC running: A clean filter and steady AC help pull smoke out of the air. In Florida humidity, damp air helps odor settle into fabrics, so the AC is your friend here.

Want the full do-it-yourself plan? Read our guides on cigarette smoke smell, cigar and hookah smoke, weed smoke, and every other kind of smoke. If you’ve done all of that and the smell is still there, it’s usually trapped in places you can’t clean: inside walls, deep in furniture, closets, and the ductwork. That’s where our whole-home treatment comes in.

Is the Whole-Home Treatment Right for Your Home?

It’s a good fit if:

  • Nobody smokes inside anymore, you’ve cleaned, and the smell is still there.
  • You bought or rented a home from a former smoker.
  • You’re turning over a rental or getting a home ready to list.
  • A small kitchen fire is cleaned up, but the burnt smell hangs on.

It’s not the right first step if:

  • Someone still smokes inside. The smell will come back, so we’ll tell you that up front.
  • There’s soot or fire damage that hasn’t been cleaned yet. That comes first (see below).
  • The smell is musty, not smoky. That usually means moisture or mold, so start with a free visual inspection with moisture readings and an infrared (thermal) camera.
  • You need hallways, lobbies, common areas, or a whole building treated. People walk through them all day, so we don’t use the whole-home treatment there; call us and we’ll walk you through the options.

Our Whole-Home Smoke Odor Treatment

  • Reaches the whole home: A dry gas fills every room, closet, and corner, including inside your AC system and ducts.
  • Breaks down odor instead of covering it: No perfumes or cover-up scents.
  • No wet mess: Nothing soaks your walls, ducts, or belongings, and there’s no cleanup afterward.
  • One visit, about 8 hours: Everyone, including pets, needs to be out of the home during the treatment. Our technician lets you know when it’s ready.
  • Flat price: $997 for the whole home, including one AC system and an attached garage. Each additional AC unit is $550.
  • Odor only: It removes odor. It doesn’t clean soot or replace damaged materials, which is why those come first.

Booking in 3 Steps

  1. Book online or call. Book and pay online ($997) or call 877-224-2532. We’ll confirm how many AC systems you have and pick a day that works for you.
  2. Get the home ready. Remove ashtrays and anything still holding smoke, wash the fabrics you can, and plan for everyone, including pets, to be out for about 8 hours. We’ll go over anything else when we confirm.
  3. Treatment day. Our technician treats every room, closet, and your AC system, then lets you know when it’s ready for you to come back in.

Apartments and Condos

A single apartment or condo unit is treated and priced just like a house: $997, including one AC system, and $550 for each additional AC unit. Hallways, lobbies, and other common areas need a different type of treatment, so call us for those.

Who This Is For

  • Homebuyers who moved into a former smoker’s home
  • Landlords and property managers turning over a unit after a smoking tenant (see our turnover guide)
  • Sellers and realtors getting a home ready to show (see our seller’s guide)
  • Airbnb and vacation rental hosts after a guest smoked inside
  • Homes with lingering odor after a small kitchen fire

After a House Fire

If there’s soot, smoke staining, or fire damage, the soot needs to be cleaned and damaged materials removed first, or the odor will keep coming back. We handle fire and smoke damage restoration too, including photos and documentation for your insurance claim, and the odor treatment is the final step once cleanup is done.
