Mold on Your Mattress? Causes, Cleanup and When to Replace It

Finding mold on your mattress is unsettling, since it’s where you spend a third of your life. In South Florida it happens more than people think, especially with mattresses on the floor, on solid platform beds, or in homes where the AC isn’t keeping humidity down.

Why Mattresses Get Moldy

  • No airflow underneath: a mattress directly on the floor or a solid base traps moisture
  • Body moisture: we release moisture every night, and it soaks downward
  • High indoor humidity: AC set too high or turned off
  • Spills and accidents: that weren’t fully dried
  • Leaks: a window, AC vent or wall leak near the bed

Light Surface Spots: What You Can Try

If you catch a few small spots early on the surface of the fabric:

  1. Take the mattress outside if you can, and wear gloves and a mask.
  2. Vacuum both sides with a HEPA vacuum.
  3. Dab (don’t soak) the spots with a cloth lightly dampened with a mix of rubbing alcohol and water, or a mild upholstery cleaner. Test a small area first.
  4. Let it dry completely, ideally outside in the sun for several hours, flipping it halfway.

When to Replace the Mattress

Mattresses are thick and porous, so mold that’s gone below the surface usually can’t be fully cleaned out. Replacement is usually the right call when:

  • Mold covers a large area or shows on both sides
  • The mattress got soaked by flood water or a leak
  • It still smells musty after cleaning and drying
  • Someone who sleeps on it has allergies, asthma or a weakened immune system

Before the new one arrives, check the bed frame, box spring and the floor under the bed, and clean or replace anything with mold on it.

How to Prevent Mattress Mold

  • Use a slatted or breathable base, or at least lift the mattress off the floor
  • Use a breathable, washable mattress protector
  • Pull the covers back in the morning to let the bed air out
  • Keep indoor humidity under about 60% (see do humidifiers cause mold?)
  • Rotate and flip the mattress if the manufacturer allows

If the Whole Bedroom Smells Musty

A moldy mattress can be a symptom of a bigger moisture issue in the room: a leaking window, an AC problem or damp drywall behind the headboard. Read mold on windows and what a musty smell means in a Florida home.
