Mold in the Attic? Causes, Warning Signs and What to Do in Florida

Most people rarely look in their attic, which is exactly why mold can grow up there for months without anyone noticing. In Florida, attics get extremely hot and humid, and a small moisture problem can turn into dark staining across the roof decking.

What Causes Attic Mold

  • Roof leaks: missing shingles or tiles, worn flashing, or damage after a storm
  • Bathroom or dryer vents that end in the attic instead of going outside, which dumps warm, wet air right onto the wood
  • Poor ventilation: blocked soffit vents or not enough airflow to let moisture escape
  • AC problems: an air handler, drain pan or sweating ducts in the attic dripping onto the drywall and framing

The Bathroom Fan Connection

Running your bathroom fan is one of the best ways to prevent mold, but only if it vents outside. We regularly find bathroom fans ducted into the attic, or ducts that have come loose, so every shower sends steam straight onto the roof decking. FL Cleanup owner James Rice-Peña explains why the fan matters:

Warning Signs of Attic Mold

  • Dark gray, black or white staining on the underside of the roof decking or on rafters
  • A musty smell in upstairs rooms or near ceiling vents and attic access
  • Water stains on ceilings below the attic
  • Damp, matted or discolored insulation
  • Rusty nails poking through the roof decking

Checking Your Attic Safely

Florida attics can get dangerously hot, so go up early in the morning, bring a flashlight, wear a mask, and only step on the joists. Never step between them onto the drywall. If you’re not comfortable going up, don’t. A professional can check it for you.

What to Do If You Find It

  1. Find the moisture source first. Roof leak, vent, ventilation or AC.
  2. Fix it. That may mean a roofer, an HVAC tech, or rerouting a bathroom fan to vent outside.
  3. Remove and clean the mold. Attic mold is usually spread over large areas of wood and is hard to reach, so it’s rarely a DIY job. Wet or moldy insulation usually needs to be replaced.
