You wash the towels, they smell fine, and then the first time they get wet, that sour, musty mildew smell comes right back. It’s one of the most common smell complaints in Florida homes. The smell comes from buildup in the fabric (body oils, leftover detergent and fabric softener) combined with towels that stay damp too long in our humidity. Here’s how to reset them.
The Two-Wash Reset
- Wash 1, vinegar: wash the towels on the hottest water the care tag allows with about 1 cup of plain white vinegar and no detergent or fabric softener. Vinegar helps break down the buildup that holds the smell.
- Wash 2, baking soda: run them again on hot with about half a cup of baking soda and a small amount of regular detergent.
- Dry them completely, right away. Move them to the dryer as soon as the cycle ends, and dry until they’re fully dry, not just mostly dry.
- Smell test: get one wet and let it sit an hour. If the smell comes back, repeat the reset once more.
Never mix vinegar and bleach, in the same load or the same machine at the same time. If you use bleach on white towels, run it as its own wash.
Why Towels Get the Mildew Smell
- Too much detergent and fabric softener. Both leave residue that traps moisture and smells. Use less detergent than the cap says, and skip softener on towels.
- Wet towels left in the washer, in a hamper, or bunched on a hook.
- A smelly washing machine. If the washer itself smells, it will put that smell back into every load. See how to clean mold in a washing machine.
- A humid bathroom. Towels that never fully dry between showers start to smell fast. See why you should always run your bathroom fan.
Keep the Smell From Coming Back
- Hang towels spread out on a bar, not folded over a hook, and run the bathroom fan after showers.
- Wash bath towels every 3 or 4 uses, and don’t let wet towels sit in the hamper.
- Don’t overload the washer; towels need room to rinse clean.
- Leave the washer door or lid open between loads so it can dry out.
- Keep the house dry: run the AC, and use a dehumidifier in a laundry room or bathroom that stays damp.
When It’s Not Just the Towels
If the bathroom, linen closet or laundry room smells musty even with fresh towels, the moisture problem may be in the room, not the fabric: a slow leak, a wet wall, or poor airflow. See why your bathroom smells. For clothes in a closet that smell or show spots, see mold in your closet or on your clothes. We offer a free visual inspection with moisture readings and an infrared (thermal) camera to check for hidden moisture. Lab testing is separate if it’s needed. If the musty smell has spread through the whole home and any source is fixed, our whole-home odor removal treatment treats the air throughout the entire home, including one AC system and an attached garage. You’ll be out for about 8 hours. It’s an odor treatment only, so it won’t fix a leak or remove mold. A towel-only smell just needs the wash reset above. Smell something different?
