Why You Should Always Run Your Bathroom Fan (Especially in Florida)

Most people treat the bathroom fan like background noise, or skip it completely. But that fan is one of the simplest, cheapest ways to prevent mold in your home. In South Florida, where the air is already humid, it matters even more.

FL Cleanup owner James Rice-Peña explains it in this short video:

What the Bathroom Fan Actually Does

A hot shower fills the bathroom with steam. Without a way out, that moisture settles on the ceiling, walls, mirror, grout and caulk, and soaks into towels and drywall. Do that every day and you’ve built the perfect place for mold. The exhaust fan pulls that wet air out of the room and sends it outside before it can settle.

Signs Your Bathroom Isn’t Getting Enough Ventilation

  • The mirror stays fogged long after your shower
  • Water droplets on the ceiling or walls
  • Black or pink spots in grout and caulk
  • Peeling or bubbling paint on the ceiling
  • Towels that never fully dry, or a musty smell

How Long Should You Run It?

Turn it on when you start your shower and leave it running for about 20 to 30 minutes after you’re done. A simple timer switch or a humidity-sensing switch makes this automatic, so nobody has to remember.

Is Your Fan Actually Working? The Toilet Paper Test

Turn the fan on and hold a single square of toilet paper up to the grille. If the fan pulls it in and holds it, air is moving. If the paper barely moves, the fan may be clogged with dust, too weak for the room, or the duct may be blocked or disconnected.

Make Sure It Vents Outside

Some fans are ducted into the attic instead of outdoors. That just moves the moisture into the attic, where it can lead to mold on the roof sheathing and insulation. If you’re not sure where yours goes, have it checked.

No Fan? What to Do

  • Crack the door or a window during and after showers
  • Squeegee the walls and glass
  • Hang towels outside the bathroom to dry
  • Talk to a licensed contractor about adding a properly vented fan
