Carpet holds onto moisture, dirt and everything that falls into it, which makes it a perfect place for mold in a humid climate. Whether you can save it depends on how it got wet and how deep the mold goes.
Signs of Mold in Carpet
- A musty smell that gets stronger when you walk on it or vacuum
- Dark, green or white spots on the carpet surface
- Damp spots that never quite dry, especially near bathrooms, AC closets, sliding doors or exterior walls
- Stains or mold on the back of the carpet or the pad when you lift a corner
When You Can Try Cleaning It
If the mold is a small surface spot, the carpet got wet from clean water (like a spilled glass or a small, quick leak), and the pad underneath is dry, you can try:
- Wear gloves and a mask, and open a window.
- Vacuum the spot with a HEPA vacuum and empty it outside.
- Blot with a carpet cleaner or a mild mix of white vinegar and water. Test a hidden spot first for color changes.
- Dry it fast with a fan, AC and a dehumidifier. The goal is dry within a day or two.
- Check it again in a week. If the smell or spots return, the problem is deeper.
When the Carpet Usually Has to Go
- Flood water or sewage: carpet soaked by storm surge, outside flooding or a sewage backup is generally considered unsalvageable
- Wet for more than a couple of days: in Florida humidity, mold can start growing within 24 to 48 hours
- Moldy pad: the pad is a sponge and is very hard to clean once mold is in it
- Large areas: more than a small spot, or mold that keeps coming back
When carpet comes out, the subfloor or concrete slab underneath needs to be checked and dried too. See how fast mold grows after water damage in Florida and how long water damage takes to dry.
Don’t Forget the Source
Wet carpet with no obvious spill usually means water is coming from somewhere: an AC leak, a water heater, a toilet seal, a sliding door or even a slab leak. Replace the carpet without fixing that, and the new carpet gets moldy too.
