Lingering Smell in a Home After a Loved One Passes: A Gentle Guide for Families

Losing a parent, grandparent or loved one is hard enough. Then comes the house: sorting belongings, meeting with realtors, deciding what to keep. Many families tell us the hardest part is walking in and noticing a smell that wasn’t there before, or one that has settled into everything. This guide is meant to help you understand where those smells come from and what can be done, without pressure.

An Important Note First

If your loved one passed away at home and was not found for some time, the cleanup needed is different. That situation calls for a specialized biohazard or trauma cleaning company first. Your funeral home, the medical examiner’s office or your insurance company can usually refer one. Odor treatment comes after that work is finished, never in place of it.

The rest of this guide is for the more common situation: a home where someone lived for many years, perhaps through a long illness, and now carries smells that won’t go away on their own.

Common Causes of Lingering Smells

  • Illness and care at home: hospice care, medications, incontinence and medical supplies can leave odors in mattresses, carpet, upholstery and the AC system.
  • Years of smoking or cooking: smoke and grease build up slowly on walls, ceilings and cabinets until the whole house carries them.
  • Pets: urine in carpet and padding is one of the most stubborn odors in any home.
  • A house closed up in Florida heat: if the AC was turned off or set high while the estate was being settled, humidity can build quickly and leave a musty smell. That can be a sign of moisture or mold, which needs to be checked first.
  • Old food and the refrigerator: a fridge or pantry left untouched for weeks can fill a closed home with odor.

Gentle Steps You Can Take

  1. Keep the AC running. In Florida, running the AC at a normal setting keeps humidity down and stops a musty smell from getting worse while you decide what’s next.
  2. Change the AC filter. It may have been holding odor for months.
  3. Empty the fridge, pantry and trash. Take it slow; this is often an emotional step.
  4. Remove what can’t be saved. Mattresses, soiled carpet and padding, and heavily stained upholstery usually hold odor no matter how much they’re cleaned.
  5. Wash what you want to keep. Clothes, linens and keepsake fabrics can often be washed or professionally cleaned before they go home with family.
  6. Clean hard surfaces. Walls, cabinets and floors hold more odor than most people expect, especially after years of smoking.

If the House Smells Musty, Check for Moisture First

A musty or earthy smell usually means moisture somewhere: a slow leak, an AC problem or humidity from a house that sat closed. Odor treatment won’t fix that. We offer a free visual inspection with moisture readings and an infrared (thermal) camera to look for hidden moisture behind walls and ceilings. If mold is found, our licensed team can handle the remediation before any odor work is done. Lab testing is available separately if you need it.

Clearing the Odor That Stays Behind

Once the sources are removed and the home is dry, some odor often remains in the air, the drywall and the AC system. Our whole-home odor removal treatment treats the air throughout the entire home, including one AC system, to remove the odor left behind. The home needs to be empty of people and pets for about 8 hours. It’s an odor treatment only, so it works after the sources are dealt with, not instead of that work.

Families often schedule it just before listing the house. If you’re a realtor handling an estate sale, you may also find our guide on selling a house that smells helpful. Curious how the treatment works? Read how the whole-home odor treatment works, and what it can and can’t do.
