How to Get Rid of Dog Smell in Your House (and Keep It From Coming Back in Florida)

Most dog owners stop noticing the smell in their own home. Guests, buyers and new tenants notice it the second they walk in. Dog smell comes from natural skin oils, dander, drool, and that “wet dog” smell after a walk in the rain or a dip in the pool. In a Florida home, humidity makes it worse: damp air brings old smells back to life, and the AC carries them into every room. Here’s where dog smell actually lives and how to get rid of it for good.

Where Dog Smell Hides

  • Dog beds, blankets and crates. The number-one source in most homes.
  • Couches and the spots your dog lies on. Body oils soak into cushions and the back of the couch. See how to get a smell out of a couch.
  • Carpet and rugs, especially near doors and in favorite napping spots. See how to get a smell out of carpet.
  • The AC filter and return vent. Hair and dander clog the filter fast, and a clogged filter keeps blowing the smell back into the house.
  • Dog-height walls, door frames and baseboards where your dog rubs.
  • Accidents. A sharp, ammonia-like smell that gets worse on humid days is urine, not “dog smell.” That needs a different fix: see how to get rid of dog and cat urine smell.

Step-by-Step: How to Get Rid of Dog Smell

  1. Wash every dog bed, blanket and washable cover. Use hot water if the tag allows, and dry them completely. If a bed still smells after washing, replace it.
  2. Change the AC filter and vacuum the vents and return grille. With dogs, check the filter monthly.
  3. Vacuum everything slowly, including under couch cushions, along baseboards and under furniture. A vacuum with a pet attachment helps.
  4. Baking soda on carpets, rugs and the couch overnight (keep the dog off it), then vacuum.
  5. Deep-clean fabrics: carpet, rugs, couch and curtains. Professional carpet and upholstery cleaning removes a lot of built-up oil and odor. Dry everything fast by running the AC and fans.
  6. Wipe hard surfaces where your dog rubs: walls, door frames, baseboards, the crate.
  7. Use an enzyme cleaner on any accident spots, deep enough to reach the carpet pad.

Don’t Forget the Dog

Regular baths and brushing cut down on the oils and dander that end up in your home. Dry your dog well after baths, rain and the pool, since a damp dog spreads that “wet dog” smell onto everything it lies on. If your dog smells much stronger than usual, a bad smell from the ears, mouth or skin can be a health issue, so check with your veterinarian.

Why Dog Smell Comes Back in Florida

Humidity reactivates odors stuck in fabrics, carpet and drywall, so a house that smelled fine in January can smell like dog again in July. Keep the AC running, keep indoor humidity down, and change the filter often. If the smell turns musty instead of “doggy,” that points to moisture, not your dog: see what a musty smell means in a Florida home.

When the Whole House Smells Like Dog

If you’ve done all of the above and the smell is still there, it’s trapped in places you can’t clean: deep in furniture, closets, walls and the AC system. Our Whole-Home Odor Removal Treatment treats the air throughout the entire home, including one AC system and an attached garage. Everyone, including your pets, needs to be out of the home for about 8 hours. It’s an odor treatment only, so urine-soaked pad or subfloor still has to be replaced or cleaned first.
