How to Get a Smell Out of a Couch: Pet, Smoke, Musty and Body Odor

A couch is the biggest sponge in most homes. It soaks up sweat, pets, spilled drinks, cooking, smoke and Florida humidity, and the foam inside holds onto all of it. The good news is that most couch smells come out with the right method. The key is matching the method to the smell and to what your couch is made of.

Step 1: Figure Out What You’re Smelling

  • Sharp, ammonia-like, worse on humid days: pet or human urine, usually soaked into the cushion foam. See dog and cat urine smell.
  • “Dog smell,” oily or stale: pet oils, dander and body oils on the fabric and the back cushions where heads rest.
  • Musty or damp: the couch got wet (a spill, a leak, a flood) or it sits against a damp outside wall.
  • Smoke: cigarette, cigar or weed smoke. See how to get rid of smoke smell.
  • Sour: spilled milk, juice or food that went into the seams.

Step 2: Check the Care Tag

Look under the cushions or on the frame for a cleaning code. W means water-based cleaners are fine. S means solvent-based cleaners only (no water). W/S means either. X means vacuum only and call a professional upholstery cleaner. Always test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.

Step 3: Deep-Clean the Couch

  1. Take off cushions and vacuum everything, including the seams, under the cushions and the back. Crumbs and hair in the crevices are a big part of the smell.
  2. Wash removable covers if the tag allows it. Use cold water and air-dry them so they don’t shrink.
  3. Sprinkle baking soda over the whole couch, work it in lightly with a soft brush, and leave it for several hours or overnight. Vacuum it up thoroughly.
  4. For urine and pet accidents, use an enzyme cleaner (on W or W/S fabric). Soak it deep enough to reach the foam, not just the surface, and let it dry completely. Don’t use steam or heat on urine first; it can set the smell.
  5. Dry it fast. In Florida, a damp cushion can turn musty in a day or two. Run the AC, point a fan at the couch, and stand cushions on their edge so air gets to both sides.
  6. Leather: wipe with a leather cleaner or a mild soap and water mix on a barely damp cloth, dry it, then condition it. Don’t soak leather.

Musty Couch? Find Out Why It’s Damp

A couch doesn’t turn musty on its own. If it got soaked in a leak or flood, or it sits against a wall that feels cool or damp, the wall or floor behind it may be wet too. Pull the couch away from the wall and look for stains, bubbling paint or soft baseboards. If the couch was soaked in floodwater, cleaning usually isn’t enough and it’s time to replace it. We offer a free visual inspection with moisture readings and an infrared (thermal) camera to check walls and floors for hidden moisture. Lab testing is separate if it’s needed. When to Call a Pro or Replace the Couch

Call a professional upholstery cleaner if the tag says S or X, or if the smell comes back after you’ve cleaned it twice. Replace the cushion foam, or the couch, if urine has soaked through repeatedly or it was in floodwater. Foam can be bought cut to size, which is often far cheaper than a new couch.

When It’s Not Just the Couch

If the couch is clean but the room still smells like pets, smoke or cooking, the smell has spread into the carpet, curtains, walls and the AC system. See how to get a smell out of carpet and how to get rid of cooking smells. Once the sources are cleaned, our whole-home odor removal treatment treats the air throughout the entire home, including one AC system and an attached garage. You’ll be out for about 8 hours. It’s an odor treatment only; it doesn’t clean the couch, so urine-soaked foam still needs to be cleaned or replaced first.
