Do Humidifiers Cause Mold? (And Why Most Florida Homes Need a Dehumidifier Instead)

Humidifiers can help with dry skin, sinuses and sleep in dry climates. But they add moisture to the air, and mold needs moisture. So yes, a humidifier can lead to mold if it pushes indoor humidity too high or isn’t kept clean. In South Florida, most homes have the opposite problem.

How a Humidifier Can Lead to Mold

  • Too much humidity: the EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. Above that, mold has an easier time growing on walls, windows and furniture.
  • Condensation: moist air hitting cool windows, walls or AC vents turns into water droplets
  • A dirty tank: standing water in the humidifier can grow mold and bacteria and spray them into the air
  • Bad placement: running it right next to a wall, curtains or furniture keeps those spots damp

If You Use a Humidifier

  • Use a hygrometer (an inexpensive humidity meter) and keep the room under 50%
  • Empty, rinse and dry the tank daily, and clean it as the manufacturer directs
  • Use distilled water if the manual recommends it
  • Keep it a few feet away from walls, windows and furniture
  • If you see condensation on windows, turn it down or off

In South Florida, Think Dehumidifier

Outdoor humidity here stays high most of the year. Your AC removes a lot of moisture as it cools, but some homes still run humid, especially:

  • Homes with an oversized AC that cools quickly but shuts off before removing enough moisture
  • Homes where the thermostat is set high or the AC is turned off while away
  • Closed-up rooms, walk-in closets and garages
  • Homes recovering from a leak or flood

If your hygrometer reads above 60% for days at a time, a dehumidifier in the problem area, or a whole-home dehumidifier added by an HVAC contractor, can make a big difference. Signs your home runs humid: a musty smell, clammy air, sweating windows or AC vents, and mold on closet items. See musty smell in your house and do air purifiers help with mold.

Leaving for the Summer?

Don’t turn the AC off. A closed-up Florida home with no AC can reach mold-friendly humidity fast. Our seasonal home checklist covers what to set before you go.
