Is White Mold Dangerous? How to Tell It Apart From Efflorescence

Everyone worries about black mold, but white mold shows up all the time in South Florida homes: on furniture, in closets, on drywall, on wood in attics and on concrete. Some of what looks like white mold isn’t mold at all. Here’s how to tell, and why it still matters either way.

Is White Mold Dangerous?

Color doesn’t tell you how harmful a mold is. Many different molds can look white, especially early on, and some later change color. According to the CDC and EPA, any indoor mold can cause problems for some people, especially those with allergies, asthma or weakened immune systems. So the safe approach is the same for every color: remove it and fix the moisture causing it. If you have health concerns, talk to your doctor.

Where White Mold Shows Up in Florida Homes

  • Leather shoes, bags and furniture in closets (see mold in closets and on clothes)
  • Wood furniture and the backs of cabinets
  • Attic sheathing and framing
  • Drywall behind furniture on exterior walls
  • Seasonal homes that sat closed with the AC off or set too high

White Mold vs. Efflorescence

Many Florida homes are built with concrete block. When water moves through block, concrete or stucco, it can leave behind white, chalky salt deposits called efflorescence. It’s often mistaken for mold.

Efflorescence itself isn’t mold, but it’s a sign that water is moving through that wall or floor. That moisture can feed mold on nearby drywall, baseboards or carpet.

What to Do About White Mold

  • For small spots on hard surfaces or furniture, clean with soap and water and dry completely (see how to remove mold from wood)
  • Lower humidity: run the AC and a dehumidifier, and keep indoor humidity under about 60%
  • For mold on drywall, in the attic or over larger areas, get it looked at
