You pull out a jacket, a pair of leather shoes or a purse you haven’t used in a while, and it’s covered in fuzzy white or green spots. Closet mold is one of the most common calls we get in South Florida. The good news: it’s usually fixable. The key is figuring out whether it’s a humidity problem or a hidden leak.
Why Closets Get Moldy in Florida
- No airflow: closed doors and packed shelves trap humid air
- Exterior walls: closets on outside walls can run cooler, so moisture condenses
- AC set too high or turned off: common in seasonal homes and while traveling
- Hidden leaks: a closet next to a bathroom, water heater, AC closet or laundry can be getting water through the wall
- Damp items put away: gym clothes, beach towels and shoes that weren’t fully dry
Humidity Problem or Leak? How to Tell
If mold is light and spread across many items, especially leather, suede and natural fabrics, high humidity is the usual cause. If you see mold concentrated in one corner, on the baseboard, or on the wall itself, or the drywall feels soft or looks stained, suspect a leak. A cheap hygrometer helps too: indoor humidity that stays above about 60% gives mold an easy time.
What to Do With Moldy Clothes and Shoes
- Take items outside before brushing them off so spores don’t spread inside
- Washable clothes: wash on the hottest setting the fabric label allows and dry completely
- Dry-clean-only items: tell your cleaner about the mold
- Leather and suede: these are tricky; a leather specialist may be worth it for valuable pieces
- Heavily stained or still musty items: sometimes they can’t be saved, especially porous items like old shoes, cardboard boxes and stuffed bags
Wear gloves and a well-fitting mask while handling moldy items, and if anyone in the home has asthma or allergies, have someone else do it.
How to Keep It From Coming Back
- Keep your AC running and set to a normal temperature, even when you’re away
- Leave closet doors cracked open, or use louvered doors
- Don’t pack clothes tight against exterior walls; leave a small gap
- Swap cardboard boxes for plastic bins
- Run a small dehumidifier in walk-in closets that stay damp
- Make sure everything is fully dry before it goes back in

When It’s Time to Call a Pro
- Mold is on the walls, ceiling or baseboards, not just your things
- The mold keeps coming back after you clean
- The closet shares a wall with a bathroom, water heater or AC closet
- There’s a musty smell in more than one room (see what a musty smell means in a Florida home)
